Damp is one of the most common maintenance issues affecting George and Garden Route homes. The combination of year-round rainfall, high humidity and a significant stock of older properties creates conditions where damp problems are more prevalent than in drier parts of South Africa. Getting the diagnosis right before treating is essential.
Why George Homes Have More Damp
George's year-round rainfall means there is no extended dry season for walls to fully dry out. Older properties - many built decades ago without modern damp proof courses - accumulate moisture progressively. The high ambient humidity means walls dry more slowly after rain than in drier climates. All of these factors combine to make damp more prevalent and persistent in George than in Cape Town or the Highveld.
The Three Types
Rising damp (tide marks at wall bases) needs chemical injection - not paint. Penetrating damp (wet patches after rain) needs the entry point sealed. Condensation damp (mould in bathrooms) needs ventilation improvement and mould-resistant paint. Each needs a different treatment. Never paint over any type of active damp. See our wall preparation guide.
George Painters assesses damp before recommending any treatment. We fix the cause - not just the symptom.
